Another Tough Season Ahead for the Braves

In 2016, the Atlanta Braves struggled through a rebuilding season, and mustered just 68 wins. After back-to-back seasons of 90+ losses, fans are hopeful for any signs of improvement in the coming year.

Unfortunately for the Atlanta faithful, the 2017 roster doesn’t appear to be vastly improved. The club did sign 2nd baseman Brandon Phillips and starters R.A Dickey and Bartolo Colon, but at this stage of their careers, none of the three should be truly impact players.

The holes in the lineup remain- third base, starter pitching, and bullpen help are all issues the team failed to address in the offseason. Meanwhile, the Nationals and Mets are primed to make a push for the division yet again, leaving the Braves on the outside looking in.

It’s not all bad news, however, as their core players look to make significant contributions. Top prospect Dansby Swanson will be afforded his first full year to man the shortstop position, and veterans Freddie Freeman and Julio Tehran look to build on their solid 2016 campaigns. These pieces could provide a strong building foundation for future Atlanta teams, or they could be dealt as trade chips at the deadline. However the roster shakes up, it’s clear that the “Bravos” will need much more firepower if they look to be competitive this year and in the future. Manager Brian Snitker will work with what he has in his first full season in command of the clubhouse.

March Madness Elite 8 Schedule, Scores and Recaps

Elite Eight

Saturday’s Games

FINAL  No. 1 Gonzaga 83 vs. Xavier 59.

1st Half: Gonzaga leads 49-39 at halftime largely due to their superior 3 point shooting (8-13). William-Goss is bouncing back nicely (13 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists) so far from his rough game against West Virginia where he had 10 points and 5 turnovers on 2-10 shooting.  Johnathan Williams is also playing well he's got 12 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block and a steal. Gonzaga is finding success against Xavier's zone defence shooting wide open jumpers. Xavier is running a high pace offence and it's working but need to sharpen up on defence if they want to win this game.

2nd Half: Gonzaga continued their strong first half of shooting with more strong shooting adding four more 3 pointers. Their offence is finding gaps in Xavier defence and exposing them, they've played great team oriented basketball. Xavier doesn't have any answers for Gonzaga on either end of the court now, only putting up 20 and allowing 39.

Analysis: Gonzaga will move on to the final four after a convincing win over Xavier, they will face #7 South Carolina. MVP of the game goes to Nigel Williams-Goss who had 23 points (4-7 3pt shooting).
FINAL No. 1 Kansas 60 vs. No. 3 Oregon 74.

1st Half: Both teams got off to a slow start but Oregon pulled away at the end of the first half. Oregon shot 60% in the first half including 7-12 from behind the arc. Jordan Bell has 8 rebounds almost as much as Kansas ENTIRE team (11). Tyler Dorsey is getting it done offensively for Oregon, he has 14 points on 4-6 shooting from behind the 3 point line. Josh Jackson took 2 fouls in the first 3 minutes and was forced to sit out a big chunk of the 1st half. Jackson and Devonte' Graham have a combined 0 points at the half, if Kansas wants to win this game these two need to make a much bigger impact in the 2nd half.

2nd Half: Oregon extended their lead early in the 2nd half, Jordan Bell continued his excellent play. Josh Jackson put up 10 points in the 2nd half to try to bring Kansas back in this game but ultimately came up short. Kansas shot an awful 5-25 from 3 and 21-60 from the field. Oregon's offence was killing clock for most of the second half and their defence limited Kansas to only 27 points in the 2nd half.

Analysis: Oregon moves on to the final four where they will play #1 North Carolina. The games MVP award goes to forward Jordan Bell who put on a blocking clinic in this game. From the start Bell had a great game on both ends of the court and he played with a lot of intensity. He finished with 11 points, 13 rebounds, 8 blocks and 4 assists.

Sunday’s Tip Times

FINAL No. 4 Florida 70, No. 7 South Carolina 77.

1st Half: Florida's offence is rolling in the 1st half draining seven 3 pointers, the most they have had in a game this year is 8. Florida is out rebounding  South Carolina by 6 at the half. Florida is having issues keeping the ball, they have 11 turnovers. Sindarius Thornwell had a hot first half shooting 75% from the field and scoring 15 points. If the gamecocks want to win this game players not named Sindarius Thornwell need to score.

2nd Half: The Gamecocks are responding from the poor first half, Sindarius Thornwell is still producing offensively but his teammates are now chipping in. Their defence has tightened up helping them grab the lead. Chris Silva who had 0 points in the first half now has 13 in the game.

Analysis: South Carolina's run will continue in this tournament, their strong second half help them get pass #4 Florida. Sindarius Thornwell had another MVP worthy game, his 26 points helped bring his team to their first ever final four game. They will face #1 Gonzaga on April 1st.
FINAL No. 2 Kentucky 73, No.1 North Carolina 75

Analysis: One of the best games played so far this tournament, both team trading big shots in the final minutes. North Carolina is returning to the final 4 after losing in the finals last year, they will face off against #3 Oregon next Saturday.

West Virginia started off the game hot with a 10-0 run and they never looked back after that. Junior Guard, Jevon Carter , led the way offensively putting up 24 points and shooting 53% from the field. West Virginia's head coach Bob Huggins used a very aggressive full court press that Notre Dame struggled to beat. West Virginia also shot 8-14 from the 3pt line and added 10 offensive rebounds in their route to victory. Notre Dame senior, V.J Beachem, had another bad game in this tournament. He shot 2-14 and only put up 9 points. Bonzie Colson of Notre Dame did everything he could to keep his team in the game by putting up 27 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. The MVP of the game was West Virginia's Jevon Carter who's impressive performance helped his team move on to the sweet 16 for the first time since 2015.  No. 1 Villanova 62, No. 8 Wisconsin 65
Villanova once again got off to a slow start and this time it proved costly. Despite the slow start, Villanova managed to come back in the 2nd half but Nigel Hayes' game winning shot sealed the game. This is now the second time in 3 years that #1 Villanova as failed to make the sweet sixteen. Wisconsin has now made the sweet sixteen for the 4th consecutive year. Nigel Hayes was the games MVP. He had 19 points and cleaned the offensive glass, grabbing 5 offensive rebounds. Wisconsin will now face the winner of Virginia and Florida.

 No. 1 Gonzaga 79, vs. No. 8 Northwestern  73
Gonzaga will move on to the sweet 16 after defeating #8 Northwestern. The game started off with Gonzaga dominating Northwestern, taking a 22 point lead 15 minutes into the game. Northwestern's offence struggled in the first half shooting, 1-11 from 3. Northwestern made a strong comeback in the 2nd half but questionable officiating slowed their momentum. With 4:57 remaining in the game, Gonzaga's Zach Collins, blocked a shot with his hand clearly inside the rim, but the call was missed by the officials. Northwestern head coach Chris Collins was enraged and stepped on the court while screaming at the officials, and was awarded a technical foul. This was a pivotal moment in the game since Northwestern was only trailing by 5 and momentum was on their side. The MVP of the game was Gonzaga guard Nigel Williams-Goss. He had 20 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Gonzaga will now play #4 West Virginia in the Sweet 16.
Zach Collins missed goaltending call.

 No. 3 Florida State 66, No. 11 Xavier 91

The Musketeers blew everyone away with their performance tonight defeating, the 3rd seed team by 25 points. Their offence stemmed from Trevor Bluiett, who finished the night with 29 points and 6 rebounds. Xavier executed the perfect game plan utilizing their depth and star players to confuse their opponent and always stay one step ahead of them.
Xavier pulled off their second upset of the tournament and will try to continue to do so against the winner of Arizona vs Saint Mary's.

In that time, the Gaels added 8 to their score, giving them the largest lead of the game (10 points).  It seems that the Wildcats only showed up for the last five minutes of the first, where they closed the scoring gap by one, making it 30-29 in favor of St. Mary’s by the break. Throughout the season, Arizona had been trailing at half seven times, and had come out with a win 4 of those times. Coming out of the half, both teams went back and forth on the scoreboard. At 2:53, the Wildcats had their largest lead of the game at 63-55. A big contributor for the Wildcats, for a second game in a row, was Lauri Markkanen. Despite the loss, the MVP of the game was St. Mary’s centre Jock Landale. The Australian native racked up a game high 19 points, along with 11 rebounds and 4 assists. The Wildcats will face Xavier, who are coming off an impressive win themselves.
No. 4 Florida 65, No. 5 Virginia 39

Virginia shot 7-23 from the field and 0-8 from the 3 point line during the 2nd half. This is Virginia's fewest points scored in team tournament history. Senior guard, London Perrantes, had a very poor game compared to his previous game against UNC Wilmington. He shot
2-11 (6 points) from the floor and had 4 turnovers in the loss. Justin Leon and Devin Robinson earned MVP honours. The Florida teammates combined for 28 points and 21 rebounds. Florida will now face #8 Wisconsin, who upset #1 Villanova earlier today.

MVP honours go to Mo Wagner who had a career game and gave credit to his teammates and his coach. Michigan will now face the winner of #3 Oregon vs #11 Rhode Island.

Here's how our March Madness predictions are doing

The first round of March Madness is over and very few perfect brackets remain. Sadly our brackets are not part of those very few. "I also had SMU going to the Regional Semifinals but USC just decided to ruin that for me. However I did manager to predict Middle Tennessee beating Minnesota. My midwest is officially a disaster with my dark horse pick Vermont losing to Purdue in round 1. To be fair it was a extremely ballsy pick that didn't pay off" -Marco. UNC puts up 103 points in win

UNC was picked by many to go all the way in this year’s tournament and take home a championship trophy. The first step was to knock off #16 Texas Southern in the Round of 64. Obviously, the Tar Heels were heavy favorites coming into this contest, but the Tigers held their own to start the game. With 16:48 left in the first half, Texas Southern actually lead by a score of 10-8. This marked the last moment Tigers’ fans had to celebrate. At the end of the first half, UNC was up 52-27. The Tar Heels had 6 players that scored at least 10 points. To put this into perspective, those 6 players alone outscored the entire Texas Southern team 83-64. It was that kind of day for the #16 Tigers.

The outcome was never in question, but the final damage was greater than many first thought. The Tigers’ 27 rebounds were no match for the Tar Heels’ 54, and the route ended with a final score of 103-64. UNC became the 2nd team in the 2017 NCAA Tournament to crack 100 points, and surpassed Arizona’s 100 points with their own score of 103. Our MVP of the game was UNC’s Justin Jackson. He failed to get to the free-throw line, but his 21 points (8/13) and 5 three pointers (5/8) lead the team. In the Round of 32, UNC will look to bury their next opponent, the #8 Arkansas Razorbacks.
